Another duet project by Paulo Bellinati together with the American clarinetist Harvey Wainapel, it was recorded in São Paulo/Brazil on August 2003, and recently released in Europe by the German label Acoustic Music Records.
NEW CHOROS OF BRAZIL is a document of today's choro, in its many forms. Most of the music on this CD was composed within the last few years. Some are more traditional in approach, such as Dori Caymmi's beautiful "Primeiros Passos" and also "Escaldado," Paulo Bellinati's respectful and playful tribute to the great past masters of the genre.
Others, such as the choros of Sergio Santos, and Laércio de Freitas, while staying within formal outlines established a century ago, definitely stretch the melodic and harmonic language of Choro.
Also in this category we have “Seu Laércio na Cozinha” by Harvey Wainapel, an example of a sub-genre perhaps to be called "choro gringo," a tribute to Laércio de Freitas.
Then there are the contributions by composers such as Ricardo Peixoto, Carlos Oliveira and Sérgio Assad -- while these may seem to range far afield from the generally accepted definition of Choro, the original and central spirit is still there, refracted through the prism of the Maracatu rhythm of Oliveira's native Pernambuco or the impressionistic sensibility of Assad.
